SurfTech 3012 Chromium Nitride (CrN) Coating

Chromium nitride. Dull silver finish.

Chromium nitride carries heavier loads than most nitrides at moderate temperature and flexes with the tool instead of chipping off it. It suits a die that has to survive impact as well as abrasion.

Chromium nitride

Chromium nitride is deposited as a hard, ductile layer with a dense structure that seals the substrate from the working environment. Compared with the titanium nitrides it gives up some surface hardness and returns toughness and corrosion resistance, which is the trade a forming tool usually wants.

  • Ductile film that tolerates impact and flexing
  • Strong barrier against corrosion and oxidation
  • Resists galling on soft, sticky alloys
  • Holds up at elevated die temperatures
