The sector rarely decides the coating. The substrate, the duty and the failure mode do. What changes between these industries is which of the three dominates.

Industrial
Tooling that runs continuously fails on wear, on galling, or on the downtime spent changing it. Films are chosen against whichever of those is actually costing the line time.

Cutting Tools
The low temperature cycle means resharpened carbide, brazed assemblies, PCD and CBN can be recoated without damaging the braze or the diamond.

Aerospace
Hardened and heat treated aerospace hardware keeps its certified properties, because the coating cycle never reaches a temperature that would change them.

Automotive
Valve train, bearing and driveline components run hotter and drier than they used to. Low friction films buy back the margin that removing oil took away.

Medical
Titanium nitride is chemically stable and holds an edge. A film one to four microns thick leaves an instrument inside the tolerance it was ground to.

Defense
Hard, low friction surfaces with a consistent finish that survives solvents, field cleaning and repeated cycling.

Energy
Abrasive slurry, particulate and dry contact are boron carbide problems. The film is one to three microns thick, so a sealing face still seals.

Performance
Motorsport parts are already at the limit of the material. A low friction film is one of the few changes left that costs no weight and no clearance.

Food & Packaging
Where lubricant has to be excluded, a solid film stays on the part. Release surfaces stop dragging and slitters keep cutting cleanly.

Specialty
The low temperature cycle admits substrates that usually stay out of a coating chamber. Ask before assuming a material or a geometry is out of range.
